China accounted for 21% of Australia's course starts in early 2026: reading the sector mix

China made up about 21% of Australia's course commencements in Jan–Jun 2026; this article breaks that share down by education sector.

China accounted for about 21% of all international course commencements in Australia in the first half of 2026. The figure comes from Chinese students' course starts between January and June 2026, set against all nationalities combined for the same period.

What "course starts" means here

A commencement is a course enrolment that begins during the calendar year. It is not a count of individual people — one student can start more than one course. The numbers below are cumulative to June 2026, the reporting cutoff for this release.

The sector mix

China's commencements fell across every sector year on year. Higher Education carried by far the largest volume, followed by ELICOS.

Sector Jan–Jun 2025 Jan–Jun 2026 Change
Higher Education 40,213 34,643 −13.9%
VET 4,787 4,300 −10.2%
Schools 2,280 2,002 −12.2%
ELICOS 7,236 5,890 −18.6%
Non-award 2,579 2,279 −11.6%

In total, Chinese students recorded 49,114 commencements in the first half of 2026, down from 57,095 a year earlier — a drop of about 14%. Against all nationalities' 234,038 commencements in the same window, China's share was 20.99%, rounded to 21%.

Reading the proportions

Higher Education dominates China's footprint: its 34,643 commencements make up most of the 49,114 total. ELICOS shows the steepest decline among the sectors, while VET declined the least. These are movements in course-start volumes. They are not statements about admission difficulty or visa outcomes — the data says nothing about whether places became easier or harder to obtain.

A note on the data

The totals measure course commencements, not unique students. "New to PRISMS" is a separate concept in the official notes and should not be read as the same thing. June 2026 is the reporting period for this dataset, not a verified publication date.
